E.M.M is the "Enrolled Missouri Militia". Missouri had two governments
for much of the War. The pro-union government established the E.M.M.
in July 1862. It totaled 89 regiments which was unprecedented
compared to other states. It was mostly organized by locality. The
E.M.M. placed tens of thousands of men under arms for the Union an
represented the largest single military force in the entire war west
of the Mississippi and was a significant factor in the ultimate success
of the Union.

While most of the larger battles were east of the Mississippi,
the E.M.M. freed up thousands of Army Regulars from garrison duty
to fight in the east. But many times they fought the Confederate
Regulars in major incursions quite successfully and pursued them
into the south.

Because of the divided character of the State, many Missouri
Citizens volunteered to fight for the South. This divided citizenry
resulted in a great deal of guerilla warfare, bushwhacking, and
violence and murders among the citizens. The E.M.M. played a major
role in suppressing such lawlessness.
